Individual Counselling & Psychotherapy

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling is a talking therapy, it is generally shorter term and tends to focus on specific issues or challenges that are current and immediate, such as stress, uncomplicated grief or relationship problems.  It can aim to find practical solutions and coping strategies.  It does not tend to delve deeply into past experience.  It can be good for specific life challenges, stress or transitions.

Psychotherapy can be a talking therapy but often incorporates neuroscience based approaches, like IFS and Brainspotting, to help people heal.  It typically involves deeper, longer term work to explore patterns, past trauma and subconscious factors that influence emotions, relationships and behaviour.  It can address complex mental health concerns like trauma, depression, anxiety and long standing emotional and relationship difficulties.

Individual Therapy - What you can expect

Alex provides weekly therapy for individual adults in a private, professional setting, either face to face, via Zoom or on the phone.  Sessions can be short or long term and are 60 minutes each.

After the initial contact between client and therapist, a 15 min phone call will be arranged to discuss the client's needs.  This call is free of charge.  The client will then be booked in for an initial assessment session to agree ways of working together.

Both Counselling and Psychotherapy are available and will be discussed with the client.  Sometimes the approach needed is clear from the outset, at other times it is more of an organic process depending on how the work evolves with the client.

Sessions must be booked in advance.
